Cataract Surgery

Cataracts occur when the eye’s lens becomes cloudy, which causes blurry vision that ranges from mild to severe. This eye condition is associated with aging caused by the lens structure changing over time. In addition to cataracts, we also treat macular degeneration, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and other eye diseases.

How Are Cataracts Diagnosed?

Cataracts are diagnosed during a comprehensive eye exam. Your optometrist will conduct a thorough assessment of your lens to check for any cataract formations.

If a cataract is identified and is causing visual disturbances, our eye doctor will refer you to our in-house ophthalmologists, Dr. Navin Tekwani and Dr. Ananth Selliyan. They’ll offer you a consultation at either our Winghaven or Cave Springs location, followed by surgery.

Surgery is the only known cure for cataracts. Our surgical coordinators and technicians will provide guidance throughout the surgical process, while our optometrists will provide post-operative care.

What is Cataract Surgery?

Cataract surgery involves the removal of the eye’s natural lens. Once the natural lens is removed, an artificial intraocular lens implant is inserted (this is referred to as “implantation” by eye surgeons).

Cataract surgery is usually performed by an ophthalmologist at an ambulatory surgical center and is done using local anesthesia (topical, peribulbar, or retrobulbar) which means patients feel little to no discomfort.

The procedure has a success rate of over 90%, and a low incidence of complications. Across the world, minimally invasive, small incision phacoemulsification has become the standard of care for cataract surgery due to its high volume, day care capability, and quick post-operative recovery.

Do I Have Cataracts?
